Training Workshops

Through our training and capacity-building programmes, we continue to upgrade the skills and knowledge of the women and girls in our programs. Apne Aap members learn how to form and run Self Empowerment Groups (SEGs), and are trained in livelihood skills, human and women’s rights, literacy, financial literacy, leadership, and more. Through these trainings, we work to transform marginalized groups of girls and women into strong advocates in the fight against exploitation

Members begin with regular trainings in running SEGs, roles and responsibilities of the office bearers, and registering the SEG with the government so that each may function as an independent group with its own bank account and access to microcredit and savings schemes. Through the livelihoods skills programme, women and adolescent girls are taught production skills, account management and how to run small enterprises including canteens, jewelry making, and selling handmade stationery and embroidered bags and scarves.

Leadership training is given to all members of our Self Empowerment Groups and Girls’ Groups. Open mike sessions are held with expert facilitators to encourage women to articulate their concerns. Apne Aap members have spoken before parliamentarians, policymakers and other public officials to fight for political representation and policy change. Girls and women are encouraged to write about their experiences in our monthly newsletter, The Red Light Despatch.

Other trainings include Training of Trainers – training NGOs, activists, community leaders, students, etc in implementing Apne Aap’s 3L model (learning, livelihood, legal empowerment) in their own interventions. Past training initiatives have included trainings for police, prosecutors and defense lawyers in Bihar and Maharastra in techniques to conduct victim-friendly investigations.
