    Formal and non-formal education for children and adults in community class rooms through catch up classes to prepare for and enrol in mainstream schools. It also includes self esteem building through art, dance, spoken English and computer literacy

    Apne Aap has taken up the challenge of creating training centres within red light districts catering to women in prostitution, their children and at risk (to trafficking) marginalised communities. These centres create alternative livelihood options

    It is today that civil society organisations like Apne Aap Women Worldwide, have delved into the core of violence and exploitation associated with prostitution and linked it with the organised crime of human trafficking. See how it uses law as an effective tool to counter trafficking.

News

  • -824 children are in mainstream schools and 1676 children are being prepared for schools in community classrooms
  • -50 girls are in an Apne Aap hostel in Forbesgunge, Bihar supported by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Government of Bihar and the Gloria Steinem Fund of the Ms Foundation. This hostel protects the daughters of prostituted women from sex-predators by keeping them out of the brothel areas and provides quality education by helping them with homework and extra-curricular classes like karate and dance for overall development. This is the first education project under the Government of India, Education for All Scheme, which is also an anti-trafficking programme. The hostel is called Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya.
  • -107 girls can break burning tiles after karate class and can defend themselves against domestic violence and potential traffickers.
            -67 women are now able to write letters, submit petition, sign their own name and keep accounts
            -Five women have enrolled for exams
  • -1005 women and girls in red-light areas and slums were trained to know and access their rights as citizens of India
  • -121 survivors of trafficking held conferences in five states of India and
            -Proposed changes in the Indian anti-trafficking law to punish buyers and traffickers
            -Recommended a National Plan of Action to the government of India which would have the provision of safe housing, education, and sustainable livelihood options for victims of trafficking.
  • -7500 women and girls launched and participated in a campaign to amend the Indian anti-trafficking law to severely punish buyers of prostituted sex and traffickers
  • -7500 women and girls read and write stories for each other about their pain, dreams and hopes in their own newspaper, Red Light Despatch.
  • -Two tribunals organized by the Nats ( a caste stuck with inter-generational prostitution ) In Araria, Bihar asking for police protection against upper-case gangs forcing the community to remain in prostitution.
  • -Over 1097 police trained in Indian anti-trafficking law and the UN protocol on Suppressing trafficking in Persons, especially women and children in Bihar and Maharashtra
